Chelsea+James // Appalachian Trail, NJ

What I loved about Chelsea and James' engagement session was that they made sure that it completely represented them. As an adventurous couple who love the outdoors and even got engaged while on a hike on vacation, they made sure to choose a location that felt totally normal to them. We spent the morning together at the Stairway to Heaven trail, a long and beautiful portion of the Appalachian Trail up in Vernon, NJ, that took us along boardwalks through beautiful grasslands over to the edge of the forest and the beginning of the hiking trail.

We walked along the boardwalk, talking about their lives and adventures together, saying hello to the dogs being walked by their owners, and just enjoyed our time together as we made our way over to the forest's edge. I had never photographed portraits in a forest before but the streaming light that came through the trees made for a dramatic location that we couldn't pass by. It was beautiful to see the dappled forest light land on Chelsea and James as they held onto one another and laughed and talked throughout the shoot.

While both Chelsea and James claimed that they would need guidance from me for their photos, their nerves seemed to drop on their own any time they looked at one another. It's absolutely one of my favorite sessions to date, not only because of the beautiful location, but mostly because of the way Chelsea and James seemed to beam any time they spoke about each other and how whenever they went for a kiss, they broke into a smile instead trying to be serious for the camera. I cannot wait for their wedding at Triumph Brewery this fall!
